The Nova Scotia Court of Appeal has released its Annual Report for 2024. This marks the third year the Court has prepared an annual report outlining information about appeal proceedings and the work of the Court’s staff and judges in and out of the courtroom.

“The purpose of this annual report is to help connect the Court with the public, fostering confidence by providing insight into the work of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal,” said the Hon. Michael J. Wood, Chief Justice of Nova Scotia and Chief Justice of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal. “I hope you’ll enjoy reading about the Court’s activities, including welcoming a new judge to our bench and holding sittings outside Halifax for the first time. We continue to be appreciative of the positive feedback we receive on this annual reporting and welcome any suggestions readers may have for future years.”

“I’m pleased to report that the volume of cases in 2024 was consistent with recent years, allowing for efficient resolution of those matters, and no significant delays or backlog of cases. Keeping the Court running efficiently only happens with the support of our small but mighty administrative team; we appreciate their work everyday.”

The Nova Scotia Court of Appeal 2024 Annual Report reports on case loads and timelines:

  • 137 appeals were filed (86 civil and 51 criminal) in 2024; this is the same total number of appeals filed in 2023

  • 81 appeals were disposed of by judgment in 2024, an increase over 2023, when 78 appeals were disposed of by judgment

  • 66 appeals saw the panel reserve its decision and subsequently issue a formal judgment; all judgments were released within 6 months with the average reserve time being 2.5 months

  • In 2024, 55% of the court time was dedicated to civil, including family law, appeals and motions and 45% to criminal appeals and motions

There continue to be few, if any, scheduling delays.
