The Honourable James H. Burrill, Judge of the Provincial Court of Nova Scotia, is retiring after a 38-year career in the justice system.
“Judge Burrill has made a profound impact on the legal community and the lives of many Nova Scotians. He has exemplified what it means to serve with dignity and purpose,” said the Honourable Perry Borden, Chief Judge of the Provincial Court of Nova Scotia. “On behalf of his colleagues on the Provincial Court, I wish Judge Burrill a happy and fulfilling retirement. He will be missed on our Bench.”
Judge Burrill earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1981 and a Masters of Business degree in 1985, both from Dalhousie University. He also graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree, also from Dalhousie University, in 1985 and was admitted to the Nova Scotia Bar in 1986.
As a lawyer, Judge Burrill joined the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service in 1987 and was Chief Crown Attorney for the Western region when he was appointed to the Bench in September 2003. He has presided in various locations since his appointment, most recently in Yarmouth and Shelburne counties.
Judge Burrill’s retirement is effective June 30, 2025. Because Judge Burrill was a full-time judge when he retired, his departure creates a vacancy on the Provincial Court. He will continue to be a part-time judge.
