Law Courts Staff Donates to Metro Turing Point Centre

A five month drive, led by The Law Courts Social Committee, has culminated in a much-needed and greatly-appreciated donation to the Metro Turning Point Centre of the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Michael Poworoznyk, the Centre's executive director, visited the Law Courts on October 26th to collect the donations and thank committee members for their efforts and the donors for their kindness.

The Centre was chosen as this year's beneficiary of the TLC Social Committee's annual Outreach Event. The committee is made up of members of the administration staff at the Law Courts on Upper Water Street in Halifax. The Law Courts building houses the province's Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court for HRM as well as a number of smaller Courts and offices.

Michael Poworoznyk looks over donations

Michael Poworoznyk explained that Metro Turning Point provides overnight shelter, day support, and trustee services to homeless men and men with alcohol, mental health, and/or drug-related problems in the Metro Halifax area. The shelter is equipped with 65 beds for homeless adult men above the age of 16 as well as shower and laundry facilities.

Metro Turning Point is a non-profit organization which relies primarily on donations. Since 1975, it has delivered the message that there are people who care and who are willing to lend a hand - not just a handout.

Here is Metro Turning Point’s Mission Statement

"Metro Turning Point creates a place that builds up spirit of community for all who gather here. Along with providing overnight shelter for male adults, support is given to help them develop a personal plan and address immediate needs. For men accessing community supports the center acts as an intermediator in this process. All who enter here shall be treated with dignity and respect."

The TLC Social Committee has been gathering donated items since June; men’s hygiene products, laundry detergent, soap and shampoo, bed linens, ground coffee, sugar, whitener, snack foods, clothing, and shoes. The committe also raises money through such events as the recent noon-hour hot dog sale and sock hop as well as a regular 50/50 draw.
