NEW JUSTICE SWORN IN The Honourable Michael MacDonald, Chief Justice of Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal is pleased to announce the swearing-in of a new Justice to his Court. The Honourable Justice David P.S. Farrar was sowrn-in to the Court of Appeal in a small formal by-invitation-only ceremony on February 26th at the Law Courts in Halifax. Justice Farrar was appointed to the Court of Appeal earlier in February by Canada’s Justice Minister, Rob Nicholson. He was first appointed to the Bench, as a Justice of the Nova Scotia Supreme Court, on September 9, 2009 after 22 years of practicing and teaching law in Nova Scotia. Justice Farrar earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Thomas University in 1982 and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of New Brunswick in 1986. He was born in Campbellton, New Brunswick. He was called to the Bar of Nova Scotia in 1987, articled in Halifax with the law firm which later became Stewart McKelvey and practiced there until his appointment to the Nova Scotia Supreme Court in 2009. His main area of practice was civil litigation including occupational health and safety, worker's compensation, construction, financial services, government and regulated industries, insurance, intellectual property and labour and employment law. During his career as a lawyer, Justice Farrar was also a part-time lecturer at Dalhousie Law School from 1989 to 2007 and was a frequent speaker at various professional conferences. He was active in various community organizations, including St. Thomas University Alumni Association, Board of Governors and various sub-committees. Planning is underway for a swearing-in ceremony for Justice Farrar. Details will be posted on this website as soon as they become available.
