Family Law And The Courts

Family Law matters are dealt with in one or more of three different Nova Scotia Courts, depending on the nature of the matter and on where the litigants live.

If you live outside the Halifax or Cape Breton Regional Municipalities and you are seeking a divorce or the division of property, you will go to the Supreme Court in the nearest community. more information >>

If you live outside the Halifax or Cape Breton Regional Municipalities and you have Family Law matters to deal with other than divorce and division of property, you will go to the Family Court in the nearest community. more information >>

If you live inside the Halifax or Cape Breton Regional Municipalities,and you have any Family Law matters to deal with, you will have to go to the Supreme Court Family Division courthouse. more information >>

NOTE:
Family Law matters that involve children (custody, access, etc.)
are heard in the Court and the courthouse closest to where the children live.

Family Law Information In-person

There are two "in-person" Family Law Information Centres in Nova Scotia; one in Halifax at the Supreme Court Family Division courthouse on Devonshire and another one in Sydney at the courthouse on Charlotte. These Centres offer:

  1. information about the family court process and services as well as other family court topics such as divorce and separation, child custody and access, and child/spousal maintenance
  2. referrals to community agencies and programs which can offer further help
  3. family law information workshops and seminars on various family law topics

*** Please note:
FLIC in Halifax closes daily for 1 hour during lunch (generally between 12:00 - 1:00 however this may vary). FLIC in Sydney may have only limited services during the lunch hour. Also - FLIC in both locations may be closed on certain days or have a change of times due to court requirements.
