The Honourable Michael MacDonald, Chief Justice of the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal, is pleased to welcome Justice Scanlan to his Court. “He brings a wealth of experience to our Court. I am sure the people of Nova Scotia will be well served by Justice Scanlan in his new role on the Court of Appeal,” said the Chief Justice.
Justice Scanlan has been presiding in the Supreme Court in Truro and Amherst since being appointed to the Bench in May of 1993. He has also presided as a Deputy Judge of the Nunavut Court of Justice.
He will be moving to Halifax where the Court of Appeal sits. He replaces Justice Jill Hamilton who recently chose to become a supernumerary Judge.
After earning his BA at St. Francis Xavier University in 1977 and a law degree at the University of New Brunswick in 1980, he was called to the Nova Scotia Bar later in that same year. He spent 13 years in private practice in Pictou before being appointed to the Bench.
